Network Services Anouncements
10/19/2007 - Recent updates have been made to the website. A section titled Fixing Network Issues has been created to minimize difficulties when attempting to connect to the network. The tutorials provided are downloadable as both Flash videos and PDF documents.9/25/2006 - During the last few weeks several buildings including the Campus Center, Maintenance and Admissions/Financial Aid were upgraded to gigabit connections to the core network.
9/28/2006 - On Saturday, September 30th, between 4:00 AM and 6:00 AM, UMATS staff will be making a series of changes to the UMATS core routing configuration. These changes are necessary to accommodate the upcoming DWDM fiber ring. The cogent ISP connection will also have some hardware replaced during this window, which should make the connection more stable. Users may see short (1-2 minute) losses of connectivity to parts of the Internet during this period. It is not expected that any sites will lose connectivity entirely as a result of this work.
8/8/2006 - Wiring projects in Baltimore Hall, Calvert Hall, the health center and maintenance are now complete. New network equipment will be installed in each building during August.
7/16/2006 - On Sunday, July 16th, there will be a 30 minute network outage between 4 AM and 6 PM so that UMATS can replace two cards in the College Park core router. All sites connected through the College Park hub will be affected: Bowie State University, Frostburg State University, Hagerstown Center, Shady Grove Center, University System Office, UC Waldorf, and St. Marys College of Maryland. This will also affect services provided by the College Park hub, in particular video bridging and Usenet news.
6/30/2006 - Network maintenance will be performed Saturday, July 1st between 6:00AM - 2:00PM. During this time all network services will be affected intermittently including Internet access, email and file/print services.
6/23/2006 *Scheduled Outage* Network maintenance will be performed today between 5:15-6:30 PM. Services affected will include Internet access and email for the entire campus. Some buildings, including Admissions, Financial Aid, Shaefer Hall, ARC, DPC and north campus residence halls will be briefly disconnected. Please contact the CTSS helpdesk at x4357 if you have any questions.
6/20/2006 - New SSL certificates for webmail.smcm.edu were installed today. Upon connecting to webmail, you may receive a message alerting you that the stored certificate on your computer differs from what the server is presenting. You may also need to clear your web browser cache.
6/5/2006 - Baltimore Hall, the administrative levels of Calvert Hall, the Health center and the maintenance buildings will be re-wired during June and July. To aid the contractor, yellow signs will be posted in the locations for network jacks. Please do no move these signs. Contact the CTSS Helpdesk if you feel the location of a sign should be. Tentative schedule: Baltimore Hall Mon 6/5/06 Thu 6/15/06 Calvert Mon 6/19/06 Thu 6/29/06 Health Center Wed 7/5/06 Tue 7/11/06 Maintenance Mon 7/17/06 Fri 7/21/06
May 22, 2006 - On Saturday [5/20/2006] from about 12 PM until 2 PM, Sunday [5/21/2006] at 6 PM, 8 PM, and Monday [5/22/2006] morning at 2:30 AM, we experienced problems with the core Juniper router at the College Park hub site. The routing engine portion of the router would lose contact with the packet forwarding engine portion of the router. After discussing it with Juniper networks on Sunday evening, UMATS staff swapped out the switching fabric module at 9 PM on Sunday, and then switched out the routing engine at 3 AM on Monday. The router appears to be stable now, but we will continue monitoring it. This problem affected all UMATS customers, since our Cogent ISP connection goes through the College Park core router. While the core router was down, the border router connected to Cogent continued to advertise the UMATS network addresses, even though it did not have a path to most of the network. Once we feel that the router is stable, we will be having the broken part replaced and there may be another planned outage where the new part is inserted. As always, we apologize for the inconvenience. Technical Support University System of Maryland
